Australian special operations team deploying to Afghanistan


Australian Prime Minister John Howard has announced the deployment of a special operations team Afghanistan. The 300 strong special operations team will be made up of Special Air Service commandos, intelligence experts and other officers.

This new deployment is the start of a build up of Australian forces in Afghanistan to a presence of 1000 troops by 2008. The 300 personnel will operate under Australian command, targeting supply routes in the country's south with the aim of disrupting an expected Taliban offensive.
