Why I think I'm turning Tory

In the past you could have put a red rosette on a donkey and I would have voted for it.

Now I'm thinking of voting Tory. I feel this government have been in power too long. They think they can do anything they like and stuff what the public think. I hope a Tory government with a small majority will be more accountable to the people who pay their wages.

Besides, it seems like there are more Liberal MP's skulking in the Labour Party than there are in the Liberal party.

Now, I'm no great political mind, I'm just one man with one vote. Like many others I will be casting my vote where my gut tells me to. I never thought I'd say this, but I think the few policies David Cameron has been touting may help to pull this country out of the downward spiral we are stuck in.

Please be gentle if you comment, the above is based upon my gut feeling, not any great political knowledge. If you're a Labour supporter, before you give me a verbal kicking, you need to ask yourself why I and some others are starting to feel this way.

Thank fuck. Excuse the language.

I've never voted Labour, and never would. I can't understand why anyone in control of their own mind would.

Still, I won't hold it against you just so long as you promise to vote for ANYONE other than the people that have been ruining our country for the last nine years.

I always use this reasoning now when I consider how I will vote at the next election; I took great pleasure in voting Blair in, but I will take GREATER pleasure in voting him out.

Toque, Peter,

Thanks for the comments, I've got to pop out and I'll reply properly later.

Cheers

Steve

I'd say vote for the worthy candidate- if there is one. If not, hold your nose & vote Tory.

Toque is partly right, except that I would say don't vote for anyone ruining our country for the past thirty years, or the lib-dims. These three parties constitute the left-liberal ruling elite, and not a hairs breadth separates them politically. All their MPs are party apointees comfortably settled to extract as much loot as possible from you the voters.
Sadly,DR has shown that he was unable to suss Tone over ? three general elections? How sad is that? With that level of judgement I would say his new choice is probably not so much D Camaroon as a Tone mk 2.
The wise punter will vote "None of the above" or possibly an independant (not many about) or any small party. UKIP, BNP, Green or English Democrat if available.

Anonymous,

Thanks for the advice, but I've got one vote and I'm not going to waste it. It's true that the Tory party and Labour are drifting together, however my vote will go to the best of the two. If you want to reply please leave the BNP out of it.

You wasted your vote the last time, what's so special this time? You seem to like the left-liberal ruling elite. Take your pick from the three Scots pretenders.

Toque,

From my personal point of view I voted correctly for the first two Labour victories. I now realise I was wrong to vote for them in the third. In 97 they promised policies which I believed would benefit the country. Now I believe they are out of control and do not listen to public opinion. Cameron is starting to make the right noises about an English Parliament, something Labour will not do.

Delicolor,

I agree 100%, and will probably end up doing just that.

Peter,

Good reasoning, are you a mind reader?

If your next comment is just to through shit in my direction you will have wasted your time writing it.

I think it's time for a clean sweep too. I just wonder if Cameron & Co are ready for government.

I have worked for conservative, labour and lib dem run councils. Like it or not- The conservatives run the best local authorities.

Kris,

I don't know why, probably a gut feeling again but I think the Tories have got there finger on the pulse, even though they have been out of power for ten years.

They seem to have a bit of a professional air about them.

Good for you. But I fear that Cameron will offer us all more of the same.

I'm considering an honourable abstention myself.

Daily Referendum said...

Elliott,

I understand how you feel, but the next Government will be either Labour or Tory and I want my vote to count.

It's a choice between sticking with what we have or taking a chance with Cameron.

I'm thinking of taking a chance.

Come on Elliot - a man like Steve who runs a daily referendum isn't going to miss out on voting in the real thing. Interestingly, I've had a few unaligned bloggers privately confide in me that they plan to vote Tory, but this is the first public announcement I can recall.

Praguetory,

I found myself drifting away from the Labour Party's policies about a year ago. Historically being at odds with the conservatives and having absolutely no interest in the other parties I found myself unaligned.

Six months ago I came up with the Idea to run a Daily Referendum. The idea was to find out what the majority of people thought about topics that have an impact on our daily lives. The last six months have increased my political awareness, allowing me to understand what I want from my government.

Cameron is making the right noises now that he has actually started declaring some of his policies.
I'm not totally sold but I'm willing to put down a deposit.

I notice a lot of your posts are about the military. You are quite passionate about that field - could that be to the point of affecting your voting intentions?

Praguetory,

Yes Defence is one of the reasons.
In the recent budget Brown cut Defence Spending by £816m. History has shown and will show again that only a fool reduces his armed forces during times of conflict.

Today's Navy is a shadow of the force it was when I joined in 1986.

We shouldn't be carrying out boardings of potentially hostile vessels with Sailors in rubber boats. We should have well armoured, Marine crewed fast patrol boats.

Last weeks fiasco showed us all what happens when you try to run your Armed Forces on the cheap.
