The Smoking Ban in England - It gets worse...

The Fostering network wants all foster carers that smoke, to be banned from looking after children under the age of five. There is a shortfall of ten thousand foster carers in the UK and the network would like to see the ban extended to stop smokers caring for disabled children.

Now correct me if I am wrong, but it is my belief that foster carers are not the scum of society. In fact they tend to be the cream of it when it comes to compassion. Does the Fostering Network really believe that these caring people will smoke in the presence of young or disabled children? I don't.

For God's sake! they are putting their petty prejudice against smokers before the needs of the children.

What annoys me the most is that there is an alternative to cigarettes and it’s a lot healthier yet still gives the smoker the nicotine they crave - Snuff. If smokers switched to snuff not only could they continue in all professions, including fostering, but as it’s 90% better for them, according to the most recent health study undertaken by the New Zealand Government health dept, they could be saving their lives. The British Government sentences 200,000 smokers to death every year through plain ignorance. The “Government now has a duty to inform smokers accordingly.” So say the New Zealand health dept and so should our Government.

With regard to the smoking ban I agree with most of the policy however I have a real gripe with no facilities being provided for smokers at BAA airports. From the time you check in which is early and necessary due to security no arrangement has been made inside the departure lounge for us dreadful people. International airports (I have recently travelled from Changi) and have used up to 10 airports in the last six months due to my job have totally enclosed well ventilated areas for smokers that cause no disturbance to non smokers so we can have a last cigarette prior to long haul flights. Despite contacting BAA and receiving a snotty letter from them and also contacting British Airways no effort seems to being made by them to consider us smokers. They just take it as a blanket statement that its a total ban in enclosed places however reading most of the literature the ban is in most places not all. Could a member of parliment take up our case to make sure that an area is put aside for us to indulge in our habit and cause no discomfort to other passengers! ! !
