Why are we giving aid to General Musharraf's Pakistan?

I can understand why the foreign office is considering measures to cut back on aid from the UK to Pakistan. What I can't understand is why we have pledged to give them £480 million by 2011. I know that Pakistan is not a wealthy country, but it can afford to run a nuclear weapons programme. I'm sorry, but if they can afford to spend their money on nuclear weapons then they obviously don't need our money. Apparently the US have already given Pakistan $10bn since 2001.

You could I suppose be cynical and call this "aid" a bribe for Pakistan's cooperation against the war on terror. What do you think?
