UPDATE: I just asked the wife if she had heard about Clarkson calling Gordon Brown a "one eyed Scottish idiot"
This is how the conversation went:
WIFE: Yeah I heard it on the radio, I didn’t know he was blind in one eye?
ME: Well, yeah supposedly
WIFE: How did that happen?
ME: He got kicked in the head playing rugby as a kid
WIFE: Is that why he’s got a funny shaped head?
I kid you not!

I've just listen to some Labour idiot in Edinburgh banging on about how Clarkson has insulted Brown's integrity, appearance and nationality. I thought:
Is he Scots? Yes, so Clarkson is right.
Is he blind in one eye? Yes, so clarkson is right again.
Is he an idiot? Well he did claim to have saved the whole World even as the global economy collapsed, so again Yes, and again Clarkson is right.
What exactly is he apologising for? Reminding the country that the PM has only one functioning eyeball? The way he behaves and the things he says, I personally thought he had none!

I have real concerns about the need to apologise for the whole statement.
One eyed - Yes, insulting, needless and actually something to apologise for.
Scottish - He is. What is the problem with being called this ?
Idiot - Subjective and i guess he has been called worse.
So the apology should be for the one eyed bit, but to apologise for calling him Scottish is just stupid.
