David Cameron's speech to the Conservative conference 2009.

So it's all over. If I had to give the conference a score, I'd give 9/10. I look back over the week and I cannot think of any part of it that I considered badly judged. If you think "A Tory would think that", then you should also consider that I have voted Labour in the last three General Elections. Cameron's speech gets a 10. It wasn't rip-roaring, it wasn't overly clever, it wasn't an attack job - However, Cameron's speech was perfect for the situation. Here's my favourite section:
So I won't promise things I cannot deliver. But I can look you in the eye and tell you that in a Conservative Britain: If you put in the effort to bring in a wage, you will be better off. If you save money your whole life, you'll be rewarded. If you start your own business, we'll be right behind you. If you want to raise a family, we'll support you. If you're frightened, we'll protect you.If you risk your safety to stop a crime, we'll stand by you. If you risk your life to fight for your country, we will honour you.

Ask me what a Conservative government stands for and the answer is this, we will reward those who take responsibility, and care for those who can't.

But no referendum. No Referendum, No Vote.

QM,

You know that I have campaigned long and hard for a referendum. I trust Cameron to do the right thing for this country in the EU.

If you heard his speech you will know that he criticised the EU. No other leader would do that, and he was giving a clear indication about his plans for less integration with the EU.

I'll wait and see, but I'm hopeful.

I enjoyed it greatly [perhaps a little too much red wine contributed to that] but there were some great speeches and more importantly - a possible way forward.

A measured, intelligent, coherent thought provoking speech from a very committed and capable man.
I wish he could start today.
I don't care how big or small his majority at the next election is as long as he's the new PM.
It seems like an age until next May.
Until then, Brown is bonkers and labour are lickspittles, but there are some foaming right wingers who would rather persist with them and go full throttle to EUSSR than give Cameron an opportunity to fight our corner.
Maybe he'll have us like the French and Germans, just picking and choosing what diktats we slavishly obey.
Labour just obey the lot to the letter because they are thick and cowardly.

Just getting myself a Whisky to watch the second half of the speech - after I had to go and collect the kids from school and take them swimming etc.

I think the is a key historic speech. The Conservative party has worked hard to earn the right to be listened to. Now it is saying something worth listening to.

The whole message was good, but aimed at the wrong audience. Anybody not reliant on the state for income and with two brain cells to rub together would be happy with the speech.

The best parts of the speech were the simply put messages. To those who take an interest in current affairs, simple messages repeated are 'soundbites' and without substance. Unfortunately the type of people the Tories need to win over respond best to this type of message.

Did you watch QT last night? The audience were generally oblivious to the scale of our problems and ignorant of Labour's record. However, a bit of red meat from Cooper regarding Tory Toffs and they were beying for blood.

These people don't watch the news or read a good paper. They respond to politics of envy and believe what they are told by figures they trust despite constant deception.

The messages need to go out, blunt, repeatedly and in the simplest of terms.
